Summary

The article analyses the definition of a business model, its structure; the theoretical aspects of relations between organizations and business models development are revealed; furthermore, the concepts of complementarity and complementarity of a business model are explained.
The introduction section presents the scientific problem: how do business models, relations between organizations and the theories of complementarity reveal the phenomenon of the business models complementarity? The research objective is to reveal complementarity as expression of the business models cooperation through the theoretical aspect. The goals are as follows: to reveal the conception and structure of business model; to analyse the theoretical aspects of relations between organizations and their business models; to present the definitions of complementarity and business model complementarity. The research methods such as systemic analysis of the scientific literature, comparative analysis are presented and they have been used to reveal the topic of the article.
The article consists of three sections. The first section presents analysis of the definition and structure of business model. Following section reveals the theoretical aspects of relations between organizations and their business models development. The third section accents complementarity, explanation of its concept and the concept of business models complementarity. The theoretical insights acquired through the systemic analysis regarding business model and its innovations are presented at the end of the article: 1. The analysis of business model researche development indicates that there is no common and commonly used definition of a business model, so it is suggested to comprehend business models as a chain of many elements of the “same” topic. That helps to increase value created by the company for a customer. The structure of business model is complex and usually it comprises elements such as offer of value, segment of consumers, channels, maintaining of relationships, partnerships, basic activities of main resources, cost structure and income flows. Thus, the business model is like a value description that is offered by the companies to one or several segments of consumers. That is important for making decisions related to business design, creating partners’ networks, maintaining relationships and profit generation. 2. There are several concepts in the scientific literature which mean cooperation between business models: cooperative business models, co-creation business models, co-development business models. All these concepts are unified by one aspect – the aim of different business models to cooperate mutually and to implement objectives of own business. The theoretical approach that explains why organizations or their business models create relations: economy of transaction cost, dependency based on resources, strategic choice, and institutional dependency. There are two highlighted reasons explaining why companies want to establish relations: the development of relations and the need of companies to get closer to the resources of other companies. Creation of common value exists as a business model, and it is based on companies’ social responsibility and business durability. Also it is evaluated as a conception of new opportunities for business. 3. Complementarity is comprehended as logic of cooperation among companies and matching of their abilities in order to create higher benefit or value for all parties participating in business process. That is considered as a unification of activities leading to the possible common result. Otherwise, that result would be impossible to achieve if the companies operate independently and there would be a lack of competences, a lack of resources, etc. Complementarity of business models may be defined as a system of higher value formation, and the environmental factors of the particular business system make impact on that system; moreover, that system includes logic of matching relationships and relations between business models and their elements. The interaction of the above mentioned relations and relationships might form the particular organizational combinations or their groups (alliances, clusters, etc.).
