KRISTINA SAMAŠONOK, RŪTA TILVYTIENĖ

The ability to think creatively and find creative solutions is becoming much more important in the current workplace environment. It improves innovation, flexibility, allows the person to quickly adjust to changes, creating better career opportunities. Thus, the development of creativity, by creating a good environment and using various teaching methods that would foster curiosity, help to keep the student interested and encourage the person to think “outside-the-box” while making decisions and seeking solutions is becoming of the most important goals in the study process.

The goal of the study is to examine how the students in Lithuanian higher-education system view the teaching methods and the environment in the development of creativity. Using a qualitative method, the students of Lithuanian higher education institutions were questioned. Afterwards using statistical method analyses based on the responses were conducted on:  the student environment and the methods used in higher education in the development and expression of creativity; the effectiveness of the methods used in the study process. The data was compared based on the gender of the respondents.

The results show that lectures, exercises, seminars and individual projects are the methods most widely used by lecturers during courses. The most rarely used methods are: sentence finishing, role-playing games, mind map, round-table discussion, problem based learning and reflection.

As the results of the study show, lecturers encourage students to be involved in the planning and organization of various activities, in sharing experience and problem solving solutions. Furthermore, the students are often asked to evaluate and share their opinions about the courses. Based on the majority of the responses, a large number of the courses still follow traditional methods and create a traditional environment.

The study found out that: creative assignments, discussions, projects, and case and situation analysis are highest rated teaching methods. Based on the opinion of the respondents (regardless of gender), these methods are the ones that stimulate creativity the most. The methods rated by female students much higher than male, as encouraging creativity are: presentation, role-playing and individual projects. On the other hand, the methods rated by both genders as the ones that encourage creativity the least are: sentence finishing, listening to audio recordings, and regular lectures.

The respondents also identified other methods that would be beneficial in cultivating the creativity of students, namely: motivating creatively thinking students, support and understanding after experiencing failure, respect for autonomous learning, acceptance and respect for various opinions, informal communication and cooperation between students and educators, the opportunity to freely experiment and make mistakes without being ridiculed, and the creation of a untraditional study environment. On the other hand, the traditional learning environment was identified by the respondents as the least effective in the development of student creativity.
